The newest Mercedes Lackey novel takes us back to one of my favorite characters - Skif. First introduced in the Arrows of The Queen" series, here we meet him before he becomes a Herald. Born in poverty, with no family he wishes to be part of, Skif opts for being a thief. His luck changes upon meeting an older man who takes a small number of boys to train in the art of being pickpockets and/or cat burglars. In this group, Skif finds safety and a feeling of family. Skif becomes a master of his chosen profession and would have remained so had he not chosen to steal a white horse, and found himself stolen instead. While I recommend this book I must admit it took me a second reading to feel I understood the correlation between this child and the Skif he becomes.
