PICTURE PALACE

By: Paul Theroux
Fiction
Review By: ElGrandePooBah

This book, written in 1978, still holds the readers attention. The work is set in the 1920-1940 time frame, and therefore manages to avoid being too dated. When released, it received reviews like "wickedly enjoyable"(Chicago Tribune) and "a real winner"(Playboy). However, to be truthful, I don't remember it being a big seller. In short, it is a good read, but rather forgettable.

Maude is the main character. She recounts her life as a photographer from obscurity to fame. Mr. Theroux captures the essence of her fame and life by allowing her narrative to detail a very human side of the character. While the book and story don't move mountains and sear themselves into your mind, the experience of reading the story is pleasing.

The plot includes fame and observations of the famous. Treachery, murder, sex, power, loneliness, all in large volumes are found in this story. Theroux works each of these powerful themes into the plot with stealth. You find yourself relating to the character and then being shocked by revelations made later in the book.

PICTURE PALACE is a murder mystery, rags to riches chronicle, heartbreaking love story, and a bit of a social statement all at the same time. It's hard to say just which item Theroux was trying to promote the most. However, he gets them all in using unusually creative twists.

I'm a pretty big fan of Theroux's MOSQUITO COAST and all the various sociological statements he has in that work. This work has some of that taking form, but plenty of other diversions to please just about any kind of interest.

If you are looking for a book that will change your life, this isn't it. If you are looking to enjoy a read, this is a good choice. There's something in it for everyone and it is assembled in a deceivingly simple package. It entertains and keeps your mind active in the process. It's definitely worth a read.
