Wildlife agent Rachel Porter is called to investigate a dead alligator found chained to the bathtub of a murdered hooker. She realizes that the gator did not die from the gunshot wounds in its head but was killed by a drug overdose from the heroin-stuffed condoms packed into its stomach. Rachel soon finds herself pursued by corrupt politicians, drag queens and a sexy police detective while trying to solve the murder.
Rachel Porter is a rookie U. S. Fish & Wildlife Agent in New Orleans. She ended up here after a defunct acting career in NY.
Her boss Charlie Hickock keeps sending her out to find poachers. She’s beginning to question this career move. Then one night she is called in to a murder scene because of a dead 10 foot alligator chained to the tub of the murdered woman, Valerie Vaughn. She was a topless dancer. Her body and face were slashed hundreds of times. Rachel discovers that 5 bullets skimmed the skull of the alligator. She begins to question the situation as the bullets were not deep enough to kill this gator.
She meets Jake Santon, New Orleans Police Department Homicide Detective. She assists him and her boss with the murder investigation and trying to bring down crooked politician Hillard Williams. She quickly finds that she is not an equal. There is definitely a good old boy network alive and well in New Orleans.
Rachel’s landlord Terri is a transvestite and her best friend. When Terri is injured in a street demonstration, the police are nowhere to be found. Rachel also ends up battered from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rachel calls Jake and they rush Terri to the hospital.
Rachel continues to find herself in many sticky situations throughout the investigation.
This was the first in this series that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt Rachel’s frustrations with the good old boy network. The author has done a good job with Rachel and I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. I like her descriptions of the New Orleans area as well. It seems right on target from what I've heard.
